Both wingers, who started the 5-0 thumping by Arsenal on Tuesday, joined the Blues in January 2023 but have already been linked with departures. The Chelsea hierarchy splashed out nearly £120m on Mudryk and Madueke as part of their heavy spending over the last two years.

But the pair are evidence for how that outlay has not translated into positive results. Mudryk has scored just six goals in 52 appearances for Chelsea.

Madueke has performed slightly better with seven strikes in 39 games, although the former PSV star has at times been picked for penalty duty. Chelsea might need to sell players in the summer transfer window to remain within profit and sustainability regulations.

Some reports have suggested that Mudryk and Madueke may be in line for departures as Todd Boehly and co. seek some much-needed cash. At Shakhtar Donetsk, Mudryk was one of Europe’s most highly-rated young talents and the 23-year-old has not lost that ability.

Madueke, meanwhile, was also wanted by a host of top clubs while at PSV and has shone for England U21s in recent years. In addition, Chelsea would make a loss on both attackers if they were to be sold this year.

Instead, Chelsea could move on one or more of their academy graduates as they seek ‘pure profit’. A loophole in the Premier League’s financial rules mean that the departures of the likes of Conor Gallagher or Armando Broja look good on the club accounts as the fee does not offset expenditure.

Gallagher, who captains Chelsea in the absence of Reece James, reportedly has interest from Tottenham and Newcastle. Spurs are said to have asked about the possibility of a deal for the England international in January but were told it would set them back £50m.

James himself has been linked with Real Madrid in recent weeks. The wing-back has struggled with injuries over the last two years, limiting his ability to make an impact as part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
