Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made no secret of Manchester City’s football operations since taking charge of the sporting side of Manchester United in February. The Red Devils could be planning to replicate their rivals’ shrewd capture of Gabriel Jesus from Palmeiras in the summer transfer window. “There are two clubs not very far from us who have been successful and have got some of those things right and United don’t. You need a bit of patience, yeah.”

While City have spent big and boast the world’s best coach in Pep Guardiola, they have completed bargain deals in the transfer market to contribute to their relentless silverware swoop. South America, in particular, has been a happy hunting ground. In January 2022, they completed a £14m deal for River Plate striker Julian Alvarez, who has already won it all and provided Erling Haaland with strong competition. He helped City win four Premier League titles before joining Arsenal in a £45m switch in July 2022.

The Red Devils are said to have been monitoring the 19-year-old striker’s progress for two years. They could make their move this summer amid plans to replace Anthony Martial once his contract expires in July. Ratcliffe has insisted United will look to play smarter rather than harder in the transfer window under INEOS’ direction. Thalys could represent a shrewd piece of business to bolster Erik ten Hag’s squad depth.
