Daizen Maeda scored a goal in just 20 seconds at Ibrox. During the explosive start to the game, he capitalized on a mistake by James Tavernier to give his side a sensational lead, catching Rangers fans off guard. Tavernier, unaware of Maeda closing in behind him, hesitated, allowing Maeda to steal the ball and score from 20 yards out, leaving Rangers’ goalkeeper Jack Butland with no chance.
The away fans are still banned from Old Firm fixtures due to previous crowd trouble. While the goal is significant, it does not set a new record for an Old Firm game. Matt O’Riley then celebrated making it 2-0 for his team.
Celtic started the game a point ahead of their rivals but under pressure, with their manager Brendan Rodgers feeling the heat as the title race slipped out of their control. The intensity of the game did not diminish after the explosive start. Rangers missed a chance to level the score, followed by Maeda having another chance to extend the lead and Butland making crucial saves.
The hosts then faced a VAR check after a possible handball by Goldson. O’Riley then successfully scored a goal for his team, taking the visitors to a 2-0 lead after 34 minutes.
