The Merseyside outfit earned a point at Old Trafford when Mohamed Salah successfully converted a late penalty following a foul on Harvey Elliott by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Despite the late equaliser, Liverpool will lament missing out on a full haul of points. Earlier in the game, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo had given United the lead, despite Liverpool’s dominance.
Liverpool unleashed 15 shots in the first half alone, with Caoimhin Kelleher remaining untested. In the second half, United showed more life, but Liverpool managed an impressive 28 shots and controlled 63% of possession. With United squandering three leads in recent matches, it’s Liverpool who are likely to feel the sting of disappointment more acutely, considering their expectations coming into the game.
Post-match, Klopp appeared visibly perplexed during an interview when a reporter posed the question about the assessment of the game. Klopp seemed taken aback by the suggestion of ‘both sides’ being disappointed, which noticeably threw him off before he proceeded to address the query. Erik Ten Hag openly criticised the ‘stupid’ errors that led his team to squander points once more, despite expressing pride in their overall performance.
He stated, “On one side I am disappointed that we have dropped seven points in one week after being in winning positions, but we have to blame ourselves for making stupid mistakes. There are also some poor decisions and not every time the same player. Still we have to improve and the sooner the better.”
“On the other side I am very proud. You see how we are improving and the potential of this squad is amazing – I am proud. In decisive areas we were losing battles especially with young players we were not confident to win them [duels].
We encouraged in the second half to do better and they stepped up.”
