Footage that emerged on social media appeared to show a man punching a linesman to the ground midway through the game. The assistant referee then gets up to their feet, before walking away out of shot, with players from both teams seen walking over to the touchline. North Wales Police confirmed that the man had been arrested and has since been placed on bail.
In a statement to Express Sport, they said: “A 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an assault that took place at Amlwch Town FC’s grounds on Saturday, April 27th. The man has since been bailed pending further enquiries.” Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Gibson stated, “Our investigations into the incident are ongoing.
We are liaising closely with North Wales Coast Football Association and urge people not to speculate or further share footage which is currently being circulated on social media to avoid potentially prejudicing any legal proceedings.”
The local football governing body quickly reacted to the incident, releasing a statement: “The North Wales Coast Football Association (NWCFA) can confirm that we have received a complaint regarding an alleged incident at Amlwch Town FC on Saturday, April 27th. The Welsh FA condemned the incident online. Noel Mooney, chief executive of the Welsh FA, also expressed his condemnation in a post on X.
He said: “Yes, we are aware of the incident, as are police. There is no room in football for this.” The North Wales Coast Football Association is responsible for disciplinary matters related to the fixture and the Welsh FA has stated that they will monitor the matter and investigate whether any further involvement is required from the Welsh FA at this time.
Amlwch, the registered home side against Penrhyndeudraeth, canceled their next fixture against Trearddur Bay, which was scheduled for Wednesday evening.
