The breaches occurred between August 12, 2023, and October 12, 2023. An independent Regulatory Commission sanctioned Tonali for placing bets on football matches, including betting on Newcastle’s matches and placing bets as part of accumulators.
Tonali played in three of the matches on which he bet and admitted to placing bets on the Premier League but not on the Champions League or international football. Newcastle confirmed that the 23-year-old is undergoing a therapeutic plan and educational program with the club’s full support.
Additionally, he has been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA about his future conduct. The suspended banning period will last for the duration of the 2024/25 season, and upon completion of an existing 10-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football Federation, Tonali will be available to return to competitive football.
The FA has acknowledged the extraordinary level of assistance provided by Tonali, as he self-referred and fully cooperated with the subsequent investigation. The club is providing full support for his therapeutic plan and educational program, and he will continue to train with his teammates.
