According to Portuguese publication Record, a deal for Alvaro Carreras to leave Manchester United has been agreed. Carreras, aged 21, joined the club’s academy from Real Madrid in September 2020 and then progressed to the first team. He failed to secure a senior appearance and went on loan to Preston and Granada before joining Benfica in January.
Benfica included a clause to make the move permanent for a £5.1 million fee at the end of the season. Despite not being a regular starter, Benfica has chosen to pay the required fee for Carreras. Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has had to use alternative options in the left-back position due to Luke Shaw’s injuries.
Carreras made a notable impact in a recent match against Braga, coming on as a substitute and contributing to the team’s victory. Manchester United’s need to make sales this summer has been intensified by their potential failure to qualify for the Champions League. The team currently sits in sixth place but is at risk of being overtaken by Newcastle and West Ham, making even a Europa League spot uncertain.
INEOS chief Jim Ratcliffe has expressed his desire to challenge top teams like Manchester City in the Premier League, and the upcoming summer overhaul is seen as a significant step in this long-term project. The future of manager Ten Hag is uncertain, as Ratcliffe has not publicly supported him, leading to ongoing speculation about his position.
