He recently canceled a press conference amid reports linking him to the top of Liverpool’s list of managerial candidates. With Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield tenure coming to a close, the Reds are narrowing their search for his long-term successor.
Arne Slot took over Feyenoord in 2021, leading them to an Eredivisie title two years later and a KNVB Cup triumph last weekend. He had previously managed AZ Alkmaar, and his coaching stock has risen significantly in recent years. Several other clubs, including Leeds United, Tottenham, and Chelsea, have shown interest in Slot, but according to The Times, Liverpool now considers him a “leading candidate” for the managerial position. Slot favors a 4-2-3-1 formation and an aggressive, attacking style of play, attributes likely to appeal to senior figures at Anfield.
The Reds’ CEO of Football Michael Edwards and incoming sporting director Richard Hughes are overseeing the appointment process. Slot is known as ‘The Pep Guardiola of the Eredivisie’ and has a connection to Klopp’s assistant, Pepijn Lijnders. There are reports of his press conference being canceled to preview an upcoming Eredivisie match. The list of Liverpool’s managerial targets has shrunk, with Xabi Alonso deciding to stay at Bayer Leverkusen after leading them to the Bundesliga title and speculation involving Amorim drying up.
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is not thought to be a high priority for the Merseyside outfit for the manager’s position. Klopp’s successor will inherit a challenging task, as Klopp has achieved significant success with Liverpool, including a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, and the Champions League. The Reds are back in action on Wednesday evening as they face local rivals Everton in a must-win game to stay within touching distance of their fellow title challengers.
