The Dutch football club Vitesse, which had a strong relationship with Chelsea in the 2010s, is facing financial difficulties. They are reported to be nearly £16 million in debt after a failed takeover, resulting in a record 18-point deduction in the Eredivisie. This deduction has confirmed their relegation to the second tier, marking their first non-Eredivisie season in 35 years. The club’s current Russian owners have been unable to sell to American businessman Coley Parry, leading to a call for support from players like Lewis Baker, Matt Miazga, and RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda, among others.
Over the years, Vitesse has had positive loan spells with several young players from Chelsea and other clubs, including Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. Despite the club’s struggles, there is a deadline on May 17 for them to secure a playing license for 2024-25, allowing them to continue competing in the professional leagues. Vitesse’s manager, Van den Brom, has called on the community to support the club and prevent its potential bankruptcy. He urges residents to get behind the club and participate in initiatives as they strive to secure their future.
