Chelsea may need to offload players this summer after making significant investments under Todd Boehly. The team’s star Ian Maatsen is considering his options for the upcoming transfer window after moving to Borussia Dortmund on loan in January.
Maatsen, who had limited playing time under Mauricio Pochettino, may be among the first players to be moved if a buyer is found by Boehly’s recruitment specialists. Despite only starting one Premier League game in the first half of the season, Maatsen has become a regular player in the Bundesliga with BVB, with two goals and two assists to his name. He is now preparing for a two-legged Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain and has indicated that he may seek a permanent departure from Stamford Bridge this summer, stating that all his options are open.
Maatsen acknowledged the strong interest from Burnley last summer and expressed his belief that his chance would come by being patient and working hard, although it didn’t work out as expected at Chelsea. He also thanked the club for the opportunity to join Borussia Dortmund on loan. There is a possibility of a summer sale due to a £35 million release clause in Maatsen’s contract, and other players currently on loan could also be part of Boehly’s plan to balance Chelsea’s finances.
Kepa Arrizabalaga, Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, and Armando Broja are among the players deemed surplus to requirements and likely to leave. Underperforming players like Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez, and Raheem Sterling, who are struggling for game time, could also potentially be on the exit list for Chelsea.
