Manchester City and Arsenal can reportedly trigger Bruno Guimaraes’s £100 million release clause in five weeks’ time. The Newcastle midfielder has been linked with a summer exit, with Paris Saint-Germain also showing interest in him.
Newcastle may need to sell a star player at the end of the season to comply with profit and sustainability regulations. Brazilian star Guimaraes, who is one of the club’s most valuable assets, has earned rave reviews since joining from Lyon in January 2022.
He is expected to attract interest in the summer transfer window but will not come at a bargain price. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the £100 million release clause becomes active in the final week of May.
The clause will reportedly remain active for the whole of June, giving interested clubs just over four weeks to get a deal done. After this period, Newcastle will have total control over Guimaraes’s future, with the release clause no longer active from July onwards.
Guimaraes has a contract with Newcastle until 2028, giving the club plenty of power during any negotiations with interested teams. Man City and Arsenal, as well as French champions PSG, are reported to have an interest in the player.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is keen on keeping Guimaraes at the club but acknowledges the difficulty of the task, especially if a sale is necessary for the Magpies. Howe emphasized that Bruno is an integral part of the team and is playing well, and his intention is to keep him at the club for as long as possible.
However, he also mentioned that guarantees cannot be made in football and that the situation may change. Before Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace, Howe reiterated his position and highlighted Guimaraes’s improved discipline, despite being on nine yellow cards for seven games.
He emphasized the player’s motivation and the positive impact this has had on his game.
