Arne Slot is the favourite to take over at Liverpool.
If Arne Slot makes his expected move to Liverpool this summer, then the Feyenoord boss will have little time to settle in before being faced with some crunch decisions. And the most critical of those could be whether to keep hold of Mo Salah, with the Reds braced for another bid from Saudi Arabia after turning down a £150million offer last summer.
Salah, the club’s record Premier League scorer, is entering the last year of his contract and has misfired in the title run-in when his side have needed him most, seemingly increasing the likelihood of him departing the club seven years after joining from Roma in a £43m deal. And if a sale is made, Express Sport assesses how Slot can use the funds to replace him while leaving money left to rebuild elsewhere.
The prospect of Slot taking over at Anfield will inevitably lead to speculation he’ll be bringing some tried and trusted names with him. And striker Gimenez has been one figure crucial to Slot’s success in Holland, scoring 47 times under his current manager in 85 club games.
The Mexico international has already been linked with a £45m move to the Premier League and has been publicly endorsed by ex-Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt. And at just 23, he would represent a long-term investment for the club when the post-Klopp rebuild begins.
Donyell Malen, the Dutch international now playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, is a player who Slot will know all about from his time in the Eredivisie. The pacy forward has scored 13 times for the German club this season, helping them set up a Champions League semi-final clash with PSG.
The attributes of the 25-year-old make him the ideal fit for Slot’s trademark high-press and attacking tactics. The forward is still under contract until 2026, with Dortmund reportedly ready to listen to offers of around £50m for his services.
Liverpool aren’t the only Premier League club facing an upheaval this summer. Change could also be afoot at West Ham with David Moyes seemingly edging increasingly close to the exit door, and some of his key players may not be far behind him.
Jarrod Bowen has previously been linked to Liverpool and since his move to London in 2019, has proven his credentials in both the Premier League and in Europe. He’s another whose style of play makes him an ideal candidate to fit into a Slot set-up, but at 27 – and under contract at West Ham until 2030 – the fee commanded by the Hammers may prove the decisive factor if Liverpool are to pursue him.

If Slot really is intent on a long-term project and opts to put his faith in youth, then a solution to Salah’s potential exit may lie closer to home – and it won’t cost a penny in transfer fees. After falling out with Klopp last season, Fabio Carvalho endured a brief, and unsuccessful, loan spell at RB Leipzig before heading to Hull City in January.
The 21-year-old has since excelled in the Championship, scoring nine times in 18 league appearances and leading his club’s charge for promotion.
