Ange Postecoglou’s quest to find a long-term replacement for Harry Kane is set to be dealt a major blow with Lille striker Jonathan David reportedly favoring a move to Italy.

Tottenham were first linked with the 24-year-old last August when their former talisman began negotiating a move to Bayern Munich, later joining the Bundesliga giants in an £82 million deal. His form has inevitably led to speculation that the North London club will renew their interest in the summer transfer window. The Welshman has struck five times in the Premier League and, despite his clear potential, is yet to replicate Kane’s prolific form.

An Italian publication claims that a meeting has already taken place between Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna and the player’s representatives. David’s ambitions to head to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium are not said to hinge on whether their club seals Champions League qualification or not. Lille have previously implied they want a £43 million fee for David, who joined the club from Gent in 2020.

He’s since scored 81 times in 173 club appearances and was instrumental in them breaking the monopoly of PSG by winning the Ligue 1 title in his debut season in France. His record at international level is also impressive, scoring 26 times in 46 games for Canada. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal have all been linked with a move for the Nigerian.
