Bayer Leverkusen is reportedly making plans for the anticipated departure of manager Xabi Alonso this summer. Jurgen Klopp’s recent announcement about leaving Liverpool at the end of the season has made Alonso the bookies’ favorite to succeed him.
Alonso has been coy about the speculation, preferring to focus on Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title challenge. The club is reportedly considering potential replacements for the 42-year-old coach, with Hansi Flick being a contender.
However, Flick is also a top candidate for the FC Barcelona coaching position. Alonso, 42, previously had a successful stint at Real Sociedad B before joining Leverkusen in October 2022.
His leadership has led the club to an unlikely title charge, currently sitting two points ahead of champions Bayern Munich. There is a pivotal clash between the two sides coming up on February 10.
In Germany, there is speculation about Klopp taking on a new coaching role, potentially as the national coach for either Germany or England, despite the possibility of him taking a break from coaching after leaving Liverpool.
